A somewhat late bloomer in the field of electronic music, Johannes Astrup has had a relatively short but intense trip in the fast-moving techno scene of Copenhagen. As a co-founder and promoter of Seaworld Tekno Klub, he has participated in the execution of a long series of community-based DIY rave events in and around the Danish Capital. After promoting these events and spending many nights in sweat-drenched, low-ceiling clubs, he ended up behind the decks himself.

Besides throwing parties and flipping disks, Johannes Astrup is also a diligent producer and notorious night owl that gladly favours sleepless nights in the studio over normal office hours. Johannes is unmistakably influenced by the fast-paced and trance-fuelled style of techno that has become synonymous with his hometown – but his take on “Copenhagen techno” has a groovier, grittier, and more percussive feeling to it. By lining up polyrhythmic grooves, he constructs a restlessly energetic beat-landscape that pays homage to old school Detroit techno while blending into the futuristic and aggressive sound design that is characteristic of modern European techno.

Johannes’ debut EP “Wake Therapy” will be released on Seaworld Records. The EP is a multi-headed beast with 5 tracks showcasing a broad selection of takes on the techno genre. “Eternal Server Error” is the title of the groovy, though ominously pumping opener. It is followed by “Loose Wrists” - a hypnotic roller with some quirky melodies. The title track is a surprisingly uplifting tune with a somewhat housy feeling. It is followed by “The Rich and the Evil” - a bouncy broken beat banger built around a catchy little voice loop. The EP ends with a remix by the Copenhagen techno wizard Ctrls, who also mastered the EP. Ctrls has morphed the opener and the title track into a twisted electro-mashup that perfectly rounds up this many-faceted release.
